Inbound to USCIS: you almost always need only the certified English translation — an apostille is usually NOT required for USCIS. Outbound (your U.S. birth certificate going abroad): apostille the original certificate FIRST in the issuing state, then have us translate the certificate and its apostille into the destination language. Translating before the apostille means the apostille text itself ends up untranslated, which some consulates reject.

Does my foreign birth certificate need an apostille for USCIS?
Usually not. USCIS requires a complete, certified English translation of the certificate — not an apostille. The certified translation is the piece we provide. An apostille only matters when a foreign government needs your U.S. document, which is a separate process for a different audience.
I'm sending my U.S. birth certificate abroad — translate first or apostille first?
Apostille the original birth certificate first (in the state that issued it), then we translate both the certificate and the apostille into the destination language. Doing it in that order avoids an untranslated apostille, which some consulates reject. Need the apostille itself? We point you to our apostille service.
